Hyderabad: Father, grand father arrested for trying to bury baby girl alive

“An old man held something wrapped in a cloth while the other one was digging a small pit. They were about to put the bundle in the pit. I shouted and asked them to stop after I suspected something was wrong and immediately called the cops,” Kumar said.

The autorickshaw driver waited till the police arrived from the nearby station and then found that the two persons had dug a pit to bury the body of what they claimed was a stillborn child.

“When we confronted them, the older man said they belonged to Karimnagar and that his daughter-in-law had given birth to a stillborn at a hospital in Secunderabad. However, their replies were inconsistent,” an official said.

The official added, “Suddenly, the baby moved her hands and legs and started crying. She was alive. The elderman man who held the baby in his hands was the grandfather while the man digging the grave was the father. They did not want a girl child, so they decided to kill it by burying her alive. They were arrested on the spot. We have taken custody of the baby who has been admitted to Gandhi Hospital.”

The girl child is dehydrated but doing well at the hospital, he said.
