Cyberabad police officer caught with 1.75 kg methaqualone, arrested

The accused confessed that he had seized the drug from a Nigerian man in February, during an operation in Mumbai regarding a cyber crime case.

Cyberabad Police Sunday arrested a police officer attached to the cyber crime after he was found in possession of 1.75 kg of methaqualone, a banned narcotic, which he allegedly intended to sell.

Sub-Inspector Kodati Rajendra was apprehended by sleuths of the Telangana State Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TS-NAB) and Raidurgam police on Saturday night following a tip-off. Police recovered a total of 1.75 kg of methaqualone in two packets from his possession.

Methaqualone is a hypnotic sedative classified under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Rajendra later confessed that he had seized the drug from a Nigerian man in February, during an operation in Mumbai regarding a cyber crime case.

According to police, Rajendra did not report the confiscation of the drug after apprehending the Nigerian man and instead kept it with him at his house with the intention to sell it in the future.

The police officer was booked under Section 22 of the NDPS Act. Along with the two packets of methaqualone, the seized items are worth almost Rs 50 lakh.

Rajendra has been remanded in judicial custody. The police said further investigation is underway.
