A Hyderabad court on Monday evening remanded YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) chief YS Sharmila in judicial custody for 14 days after she was arrested for allegedly assaulting police personnel during an altercation. The party has called a state-wide agitation on Tuesday to protest the arrest.
Sharmila was detained by Jubilee Hills police on Monday afternoon after she allegedly slapped a woman constable and manhandled a sub-inspector who stopped her from entering her car. Purported videos of the incident were widely shared on social media.
The woman police constable and sub-inspector were trying to prevent Sharmila from leaving her city residence to stage a protest outside the office of the special investigation team (SIT) probing the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) question paper leak case.
The police maintained that the YSRTP had no prior permission to stage a protest. Sharmila was shifted to the women’s prison in Chanchalguda late at night.

The YSRTP has asked its followers to burn effigies of the government on Tuesday, besides observing peaceful protests before Ambedkar statues in all Assembly constituencies.
The police have registered an FIR against Sharmila invoking sections 353 (charges of assault and use of criminal force to deter public servant from discharging duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC.
