Condemning the decision of 19 Opposition parties to boycott the inauguration of the new building of the Parliament, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday said this was an attack on democratic values and constitutional beliefs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new Parliament building on Sunday.

The CM was speaking at the concluding ceremony of Sansad Khel Spardha at a sports complex in Nadiad of Kheda district. Quoting Patel, an official release said, “The Opposition prevents developmental schemes by opposing them. By lowering the level of politics, the Opposition has insulted 140 crore people of India.”

“Parliament is a pious institution in democracy and it is like the heartbeat of a democracy. In Parliament, various decisions are taken on the country’s policies. And it brings change in people’s lives,” he added.

Patel further said that “such disgraceful acts of Opposition parties is not a first”. He cited various instances in the past where the Opposition allegedly opposed conferring Bharat Ratna on former president Pranab Mukherjee and the candidature of Droupadi Murmu for the post of President.Meanwhile, praising the PM over his six-day tour of countries like Japan, Papua New Guinea, Australia and Fiji, Patel said that following this tour, India has emerged as a leader of developing countries.

An official release quoted the CM as saying that during this tour, the PM met more than 20 leaders of foreign countries and participated in more than 40 meetings. “Narendrabhai Modi is a leader loved by the world. The way he has been welcomed by various countries and their leaders show his immense popularity. It indicates India’s increasing image at world level. A number of countries are looking at India with expectation. Under the leadership of Narendrabhai Modi, India is becoming the voice of many countries,” the release stated.

Referring to the unprecedented welcome Modi got at Papua New Guinea when the latter’s Prime Minister touched his feet, the CM said, “Probably, it is for the first time that leader of one sovereign state has touched the feet of leader of another sovereign state. This honour of Narendrabhai Modi, India and India’s values.”

The CM also referred to Modi’s visit to Australia where the latter’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, said, “Modi is the boss.” “Following this tour of the Prime Minister, India has emerged as leader of developing countries. And even developed countries have also started to look at India with expectation,” the release quoted Patel.
