A day after 52 final-semester students of Polytechnic College for Girls in Surat were declared “failed” in a practical examination, the principal on Thursday said it was a “mistake” on the institute’s part and that all the students had cleared the final examination.

The affected students were pursuing Diploma in Textile Designing.

The results were declared on Wednesday and put online. But much to their shock, the students were declared failed in the practical test of Design Visualisation. The students visited the college at Athwagate and enquired with the authorities.

The authorities learnt that the Gujarat Technical University (GTU) in Ahmedabad, which conducts its theory exams, had not received the marks of practical examination sent online by the college.

College principal P M Patel said,“The mistake was done by us. The practical marks uploaded for the GTU exam section did not reach them. As a result, the students were not given any marks. There was some problem in the server. Nobody from GTU verified (the results). We could not send hard copies of practical marks due to workload.”

The institute later sent a fresh marksheet to the GTU after which all the students were declared pass today.
