Rare documents,telegrams,pictures and maps,relating to Haryana’s contribution to the 1857 revolt and other freedom struggle movements,were on display at Government College of Girls in Sector 14,here on Tuesday. The exhibition was organised by the Haryana Archives Department on the occasion of 69th anniversary of the launch of the ‘Quit India Movement’.
Amongst the artefacts is a telegram dated May 10,1857 dispatched by the then deputy commissioner,Ambala,to Sir John Lawrence,Chief Commissioner of Punjab,at Rawalpindi ( now in Pakistan),reporting about the state of the 60th and 5th Regiments,that revolted.
Another rare exhibit is a letter dated June 2,1857 from Capt HR James,officiating Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Punjab,to the Secretary,Government of India,Foreign Department,about the killing of Europeans at Hansi and Hisar.
Others include a letter detailing the revolt headed by Rao Tula Ram,who had gathered Ranghars against the British at Rampoora fort (Rewari).
Documents relating to the list of jewels of the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Jaffar that was seized after the revolt,proclamation of Queen Victoria regarding taking over the rule of British East India Company directly under Crown,ban on Mahatma Gandhi’s entry into Punjab,arrest of Mahatma Gandhi at Palwal,list of freedom fighters of Rohtak- convicted under political offences are among the many put on display at the exhibition.
