Green school of thought

My tree,my protector’ is what the primary school at Ghodegaon village,about 80 km from the city,preaches and follows.

Planting around 2,000 trees with villagers and pledging to protect the trees by naming them after individuals has got the school in Ambegaon taluka the Zilla Parishad ideal school award this year and its teacher.

The school surrounded by lawns and huge trees is the green spot of the village. With just 52 students from class one to four,its primary section has huge cut-outs of green initiatives and charts and models announcing the green movement.

Children aged 6-10 are taught rainwater harvesting,methods to grow flowering plants and water recycling. The effort by the school teachers is paying off.

When Kaveri and Shubam from class three show off the ten trees named after them,they know the trees will be “rakshaks” of the village. The children even tie rakhis to the trees,which they say are their family.

Ghodekar believes in catching them young. The teacher has 18 years experience,but he began focusing on creating environment awareness among his students 10-12 years ago.

The effort soon caught the attention of the gram panchayat,which extended monetory support. With 20 dedicated teachers and the support of the panchayat,the school has taken many learning initiatives.

“The focus is on students and this has helped them understand concepts better. Our many experiments have helped the children do well,” said Ghodekar.

Now,professionals moving towards teaching as full-time career

For most engineering and business administration graduates a career in their core industries is ideal but teaching as a profession is slowly becoming a trend as a lot of youngsters are taking it up as a career choice. The choices range from engineering to under graduate courses in science,commerce and arts.

Aspiring teachers say they find teaching more challenging as a profession. They can interact with youngsters on a personal level and can also continue with the research work in their own field.

Amol Deogadkar,26,who has recently started teaching at the MIT School OF Management College says he opted for the profession because it is interesting. Deogadkar is a mechanical engineer who holds two post graduate degrees one in Finance and the other in Operations Management. “Even during my post graduate days I would help my friends and batchmates with their courses. After completing my course I wanted to take up teaching and now I plan to continue it full time,” he says.

As part of the ‘Teach For India’ campaign,youngsters take a break from their regular jobs and teach school children. A lot of youngsters are veering towards teaching in colleges too. The initial salary is not very high for most of them,given that they begin as assistant professors but money is not a major factor for them. Deogadkar says,“I am into my second semister of teaching undergraduate students. It takes a while initially but once you are established as a good professor it does not take long to climb up the success ladder.”

Raju Roshan,an engineer who completed his masters in business administration is at present a visiting faculty at the DY Patil Centre of Management and Research,Chikli. He says,“I teach statistics and it is a very fulfilling job. It is not just about teaching a subject but also about helping the students grasp the same better. In fact,my students come up with problems regarding the subject. Students find it easier to relate more to the young professors.”

Roshan and Deogadkar have started working recently,on the other hand,Amruta Dixit and Pradyna Gaikwad have been in the profession for almost two years now. While Dixit is an MBA finance graduate teaches finance,Gaikwad is a B Sc Chemistry graduate and teaches HR at the MITSOM college. For both of them the profession is fun-filled and also lets them expand their own knowledge.
