It couldnt have been more dramatic. Or more special. As Delhi U-22 batsman Rahul Yadav raised his bat to celebrate his unbeaten ton against Vidarbha on Tuesday, drum beats and bagpipes exploded from the neighbouring Ambedkar Stadium.
The youngster had made it into the Delhi Ranji side last year, but weak performances saw him contesting in this edition of the CK Nayudu Trophy. The age category tournament didnt start too well for a player looking to get another call for the senior side, with scores of nine and ten against Haryana in the opener. But an unbeaten 143 on Tuesday will go a long way in changing that. My main aim was to score big. The last match had a tough wicket so no one got a chance to really perform, but the wicket at the Kotla is true. I just kept telling myself to be in the middle. I have been a part of this U-22 side for fours years now and I wanted at least a hundred to be in the reckoning for the Ranji team, said the 22 year old.
Though he played his innings in scintillating style, the nineties tested his nerves. Yadav managed a confident punch to get to his first three figure mark this season. Actually,I was looking to rotate as much strike as possible. But I had played four dot balls in that over which kept me from venturing for runs. It was then that I edged the fifth delivery that moved off the wicket. With just one run away from the magic figure,I thought I should just play it safely and complete my century, said Yadav.
Yadav feels his demotion in the batting order is responsible for the consistency he has shown of late. Being a wicket-keeper,Yadav walked in to bat at No 4 for Delhi, while he was made to open until not too long back. The reason could be the rest I get between keeping and batting. Earlier,I used to bat immediately after keeping and got out quickly, he said.
With an asterisk against his runs overnight,Yadav is looking to get past his highest score of 150,which he scored last year. Such chances are rare,I want to make the most of it. As of now,I am high on confidence and want to deliver the goods on Wednesday. But more than anything else,I want my team to qualify for the Elite group, Yadav said.
