The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is pulling out all the stops to welcome around 800 delegates from over 100 countries for the 46th World Heritage Committee session, scheduled to start on July 21.
To create a welcoming atmosphere for the guests, NDMC has launched a series of beautification projects akin to efforts made during the G20 Summit. The route from Sardar Patel Marg to Pragati Maidan’s Bharat Mandapam will be adorned with floral decorations.
NDMC Vice-Chairman Satish Upadhyay said approximately 50,000 ornamental plants and flowers have been supplied by the Horticulture Department, along with eight floral boards showcasing the World Heritage Committee logo. “Sardar Patel Marg has been transformed with vibrant potted plants and floral decorations,” said Upadhyay.
“The Horticulture Department has been asked to maintain the freshness of these decorations and continuously replace any plants damaged by heat or waterlogging,” he added.
Precautions are being taken by the civic body to ensure the delegates’ visit is smooth. “Given the ongoing monsoon season and previous challenges with waterlogging, NDMC has implemented extensive measures,” Upadhyay said.
Six control rooms with 175 personnel will monitor and address any waterlogging concerns. A network of 120 fixed pumps and 75 portable pumps has been placed to manage water accumulation, along with 48 temporary staff operators on standby for emergencies.
“Comprehensive surveillance through the NDMC’s Command & Control Centre will help manage any waterlogging, road blockages, or other disruptions,” Upadhyay said, adding that additional CCTV cameras have been installed at vulnerable points.
All roads in the NDMC area have been repaired and cleared of any damage caused by heavy rains.
