Two workers died of asphyxiation while cleaning a sewage tank in a residential society in Gurgaon on Monday, the police said.
The police identified the deceased as Paramjeet (36), a Jhajjar resident, and Raj Kumar (45), who hailed from Uttar Pradesh.
The workers had descended into the sewage tank, which was around 30 feet deep, at Raheja Navodaya residential society in Sector 92 on Monday, the police said. “At around 1.30 pm, we were informed that two men were stuck inside the tank. We got them out after 1.5 hours of rescue operations but they were declared dead on arrival,” a police official said.
A private company had the tender to clean the tank. Families of both labourers have given their statements and an FIR was registered on Tuesday, the police said.
A police officer said the sewage was 5-6 feet deep and the workers died of asphyxiation. “We are not sure if the labourers had protective gear while entering the tank as we did not find it while retrieving the bodies,” the officer added.
