The Delhi government is planning to open centres for women’s security in each district. They are likely to be located in the district magistrate’s office.
According to a source, these points, called Nirbhaya Centres, will be hubs for addressing various crimes and issues that concern women. Funds will likely be sought from the Centre for the purpose.
“It will not just be for the physical trauma women suffer. The centres will also provide them counselling and medication, if needed, as well as legal aid,” an official said.
“Since managing too many command centres would strain our resources, we will have just one command centre for the state,” the source added. All helplines will be merged into one as it would help the government cut expenditure. If government plans come through, bus marshals will also be deployed in every bus. Approximately 11,000 marshals would be deployed, with 800 in the first phase, a senior AAP leader said. District magistrates would be given powers to manage the centres. “They would be doing night rounds and inspection of public places and transport,” the source said.
