Holding a six months old baby, they would pose as customers in jewellery shops, steal gold ornaments and hide them in the baby’s diaper. The mother-daughter duo was on Sunday caught stealing jewellery by a shop’s CCTV camera. Both were arrested. The incident was reported from Southeast Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar.

Meenakshi (42) along with her daughter Ritu (22) first went to Ramakrishna Jewellers in Central Market, Lajpat Nagar. They told the salesperson that they wanted to buy gold pendants. After spending around half-an-hour in the shop, they left without purchasing anything.

However, the pendant they had enquired about was missing soon after they left the shop, arousing the suspicion of the salesperson, who alerted the manager.

“The CCTV footage of the shop was examined and the salesperson was surprised to see how the women stole the pendant with no one noticing. One of the women, who was holding the child in her arms, swiftly stuffed the pendant in the baby’s diaper and then the two left,” a police officer said.

The women then visited another jewellery store in the market, Akshardham Jewellers. Using the same modus operandi, the women stole a gold chain weighing 13 grams. However, before the women could leave the store, the staff from Ramakrishna Jewellers arrived there and alerted the manager of that store.

“The women were frisked by a woman guard and a gold chain along with the stolen pendant were recovered from the diaper. They then made a PCR call and a team of police officers reached the shop. The women were arrested and a case registered against them,” a senior police officer said.

The police have recorded statements of the women and are now trying to ascertain if they had stolen jewellery from other shops in the past. “They hail from Darbhanga in Bihar and were presently staying in Ashok Nagar. Investigation are on,” the officer said.
