Police and NDRF have launched a joint search operation to recover the body.
The victim is a resident of Roorkee, in Uttarakhand and was currently residing in Delhi at a relative’s place. The two suspects have been identified as Sufiyan, the deceased’s brother from Roorkee, and Mahtab, the deceased’s cousin and a resident of Muzaffarnagar.
The two men suspected that the victim had an affair with a man in Ghaziabad. The accused had brought his sister from Delhi to Ganga Canal in Muradnagar on the pretext of taking her home, then took her to a secluded area and strangled her, a senior police official said.
“On December 16 evening, Police’s Cheetah mobile stopped two suspicious persons for questioning near Ganganagar (Ganga Canal) in Muradnagar police station area. Both the suspects said that they had strangled their sister with a towel and threw her body in the Ganga Canal. Police immediately launched search operations with the help of NDRF and local divers. Both the accused have been detained and are being interrogated,” said Naresh Kumar, ACP Masoori, Ghaziabad.
The police have recovered the victim’s sandals, Aadhaar card and the towel with which she was allegedly strangled.
The ACP further said that prima facie it is a case of honour killing. “Citing the reason for killing the woman, both the accused said that their sister was in love with a man. The family did not approve of it and so they killed her,” added Kumar.
