His department under fire after an officer was caught on camera slapping a young woman protesting against the rape of a five-year-old,Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said it was indefensible and a one-off incident though there was sudden and grave provocation.
It is a part of our training that police officers should not get provoked and must exercise utmost restraint. This is corroborated by the handling of subsequent series of demonstrations by the Delhi Police all over the city, the Commissioner said in an affidavit before the Supreme Court.
A bench led by Justice G S Singhvi had sought a response from Kumar over the recent incident, where ACP Bani Singh Ahlawat was caught on camera assaulting a young woman.
In reply to this notice,Kumar informed the bench that ACP Ahlawat had been suspended since his act was indefensible, unpardonable, inappropriate and not becoming of a police officer.
However, the affidavit claims that assaulting the woman protester was a one-off incident of a policeman losing his temper after two women spat on him.
