The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested a woman and her son for allegedly killing her husband and chopping his body into 10 pieces. In a case said to share similarities with the Shraddha Walkar murder case, the mother-son duo allegedly kept the body parts in their fridge and dumped them later in Pandav Nagar and Trilokpuri.
The incident is said to have taken place in June. Local police found a severed head and some other body parts near a ground in Pandav Nagar, but could not identify the body at the time.
Speaking at a press conference Monday, DCP (crime) Amit Goel said, “On June 5, some body parts were recovered at Ramlila Maidan in the east district. In the next three days, two legs, two thighs, a skull and a forearm were recovered, and a case was filed.”
He said police later identified the body as Anjan Das after analysing CCTV footage and conducting door-to-door verification.
“A further investigation revealed that Das had been missing for the past five-six months and that there was no missing-complaint filed by the family members. This created suspicion in our minds and his wife Poonam and son Deepak were picked up. They confessed to his murder on questioning. We also found footage of them walking towards different areas after the incident,” said Goel.
According to police, Poonam also revealed that she had been “fed up” with Das, who was her second husband.
Special commissioner of police (crime) Ravindra Yadav said Poonam had got married when she was 13 or 14. “Her first husband left her and went to Delhi. She came here looking for him but moved in with a man named Kallu. The couple have three children including Deepak. Kallu later died of liver failure. She then got married to Das in 2017. However, Das did not tell her that he had been married and had eight kids from his first marriage,” Yadav said.
Deepak later complained that Das had harboured ill intentions towards the former’s wife and Poonam also felt that her husband was harassing her sister, Yadav said. “They said Das would also take their money,” he added.
On May 30, the mother-son duo allegedly spiked Das’s liquor with sleeping pills. When he fell down, they allegedly slit his neck.
“They said they left the body for a whole day in the house for the blood to drain out. They chopped the body into 10 pieces and discarded them in the next few days. So far, we have recovered six pieces,” DCP Goel said. “The accused said that Das wasn’t earning and the couple often had fights.”
CCTV footage showed the accused walking towards a vacant ground with a bag, ostensibly containing body parts.
Police said they had also recovered clothes worn by the accused when they allegedly dumped the body along with Das’s mobile phone. He was a lift operator.
The incident took place almost a month after 27-year-old Walkar was killed allegedly by her live-in partner and her body was chopped into 35 pieces. Walkar’s body was also stored in a fridge and disposed of over the next few months, according to police.
