Woman on fire, husband and his brother arrested

According to police, Dolly married Jatin last December and began living with her husband and in-laws in their Uttam Nagar house.

A 29-year-old woman suffered 40 per cent burns after she was allegedly set on fire by her husband and brother-in-law in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on Thursday evening. Police said Dolly’s husband has been arrested and his brother has been detained for questioning. Dolly’s father-in-law also suffered burns when he tried to save her.

According to police, Dolly married Jatin last December and began living with her husband and in-laws in their Uttam Nagar house. However, police said, Dolly’s parents alleged that her in-laws began harassing her for dowry. They told police that Jatin used to regularly pick fights with Dolly over the issue.

“Jatin’s parents could not take the daily fights and moved into a flat nearby. A few days later, Dolly moved back to her parent’s house as well. Meanwhile, the couple’s families urged them to come to a settlement. They agreed and, along with their respective families, met at Jatin’s parents’ house. However, both parties got into a heated argument. In her statement to the magistrate, Dolly said Jatin and his brother poured oil on her and set her on fire,” a senior police officer said.

Police said Jatin’s father Ramesh Arora tried rescuing Dolly and suffered 35 per cent burn injuries in the process. Both were rushed to LN hospital where they are undergoing treatment.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushpendra Kumar said, “We have registered a case under Sections 307 and 498A of the IPC (attempt to murder, and a husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty). We are probing the matter.”
