A 26-year-old woman and her two daughters, one aged six months and the other two years, were found murdered on Monday at their house in Bhangel, Noida.
Police suspect they were killed by the woman’s husband, apparently upset that both his children were daughters. The accused, Amit Verma, is absconding.
Verma, police suspect, strangled his wife Sarla with a dupatta and then smothered his daughters, Tannu (2) and six-month-old Mannu, with a pillow before fleeing.
Police said Verma was upset after the birth of his second daughter six months ago. Sarla’s family also alleged that Verma and her in-laws used to harass her for dowry.
The bodies of Sarla and the two girls were discovered by Verma’s father on Monday morning. His son, who works at an export firm in Noida, was missing.
“In their complaint, Sarla’s family members, who live in Greater Noida, have alleged that Amit used to harass her for dowry and was upset that both his children were girls. We have launched a search for him. We have arrested his father, two brothers and sister-in-law based on a complaint filed by Sarla’s family,” SSP (Gautam Buddh Nagar) Preetinder Singh said.
“For the last three years, Amit and his family harassed my daughter for dowry, assault and abuse her. Things got worse when Mannu was born. A fortnight ago, both families met to resolve the issue. Sarla moved into our house with her daughters. She went back only after an assurance that Amit would not misbehave with her anymore,” Jagbeer, Sarla’s father, said.
“Amit has been booked for murder, while his family members have been arrested on dowry charges. A forensic team collected samples from the scene of crime and a massive search has been launched for Amit. We hope to arrest him soon,” a senior officer said.
