On Sunday night, Sonia Naveen — affiliated with the Maneka Gandhi-led People for Animals (PFA) — informed police that her five pet dogs had disappeared.
Local police from Hazrat Nizamuddin station reached the house and inquired about the dogs.
Sonia said she had been feeding and sheltering the dogs, which used to roam about the service lane that runs parallel
to her house.
Police said she used to keep food and water for the dogs, who would routinely turn up in her backyard thrice a day.
They used to eat and go and return for the next meal. On many days, they even slept in her backyard.
On Sunday night, the dogs did not turn up and Sonia got worried, police said.
“We registered a case under sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and appropriate sections of the IPC and began investigating. The woman alleged that she had gone through CCTV footage from cameras installed in her neighbour’s house and found a man putting the dogs into his car before driving off. The woman said the car belonged to a man in the area. However, we have not detained or arrested him,” a police officer said.
He said two of the dogs returned to the woman’s house on Tuesday evening.
