The traffic police have drawn up a plan of action to ensure that the Delhi government’s odd-even scheme for private vehicles, which starts Friday, goes off without a hitch. According to the plan, thousands of civil defence volunteers will help traffic inspectors at nearly 200 locations.
“At least 5,000 volunteers of civil defence will be deployed in these locations. While traffic police will issue the challans, the volunteers will distribute pamphlets and flowers to motorists,” said Muktesh Chander, special commissioner of police (traffic).

Sub-inspectors and assistant sub-inspectors will also be deployed in some locations and they will issue challans to those who violate the policy. To avoid arguments with errant vehicle owners, policemen have been asked to carry a copy of the scheme’s notification and show it to vehicle owners and drivers before issuing challans. The challan machines have also been reprogrammed so that they can issue a slip of Rs 2,000 for violators under the Motor Vehicle Act, said sources.
Police officials have urged volunteers to ensure that the steps taken by them did not create unnecessary hurdles for commuters or lead to chaos.
While nearly 1,000 traffic policemen are deployed everyday across the city, over 2,000 officials will be on duty Friday. Police officials posted on the border of Delhi will also keep a check on vehicles entering the city.
