Wider footpaths, refuge space and roads designed for universal access to aid the differently abled and elderly — these are some of the features that the renovated Bhairon Marg-Mathura Road stretch is soon expected to have as part of a walkability plan.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena last month reviewed the plan for the larger Purana Qila – Pragati Maidan corridor presented by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and asked for it to be finalised at the earliest incorporating all pending concerns.
Sources in the L-G House said this had now been finalised and was expected to receive Saxena’s nod in the coming days. The L-G had, at a meeting on March 21, given his nod for a similar walkability plan to be put in place at Mandi House and for multi-modal integration at several Metro stations.
The walkability plan takes into account major stretches that include Mathura Road, Sikandra Road, Bhagwan Dass Road, Tilak Road, Purana Qila Road, Bhairon Marg, Sher Shah Road and Subramaniyam Bharti Marg.
It also factors in Pragati Maidan Metro Station and the Tilak Bridge and Pragati Maidan Railway stations. Significant destinations like Purana Qila, Pragati Maidan, the Delhi Zoo, Sher Shah Suri Gate among others are part of the corridor.
According to the plan, the overall walkability proposal for the stretch, divided into separate components, recommended separate interventions for different junctions on Mathura Road.
Improvement in pedestrian facilities and provision of universal accessibility, for instance, has been proposed for the Subramaniam Bharti-Mathura Road junction; provision of pick-up and drop-off facilities at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium; and a seamless crossing or intersection had been suggested for Bhairon Marg-Mathura Road intersection.
Similarly, enhancing the pedestrian plaza, provision of recessed bus stops, extension of foot overbridges on both sides of the approach roads and multi-modal integration with existing transportation facilities such as Metro stations have been proposed for the Purana Qila-Mathura Road and Bhagwan Dass Road-Mathura Road junctions.
Provisions aimed at seamless movement of pedestrians on the stretch, according to the plan, include kerb ramps, controlled access points along footpaths through a three-row bollard arrangement to keep two-wheelers out, and guide rails at intersections to prevent jaywalking.
