Water crisis extends to Lutyens’ area: NDMC vice-chairman blames Jal Board

NDMC vice-chairperson Satish Upadhyay and NDMC member Kuljeet Chahal, who are members of the BJP, placed the blame squarely on the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).

The Jal Board supplies the NDMC with 125 MLD of water daily from three water treatment plants — Wazirabad, Chandrawal, and Sonia Vihar — but currently, the supply is between 70 to 80 MLD. To mitigate the shortfall, the NDMC said it has deployed 10 tankers, each with a capacity of 10,000 litres, to areas facing a shortage.

“The NDMC has also installed surface water tanks with a capacity of 10,000 litres each in major JJ clusters like Sanjay Camp and Vivekanand Camp,” said Upadhyay.

“In the last 10 years, the Delhi government has not improved water reservoirs or undertaken comprehensive desilting of the Yamuna River to enhance water retention capacity,” he added.

In response, the Delhi government in a statement said, “… To prevent misuse of water, DJB officials have been directed to conduct daily inspections… we appeal to the BJP to stop making baseless allegations and jointly appeal to the Haryana government to release adequate amount of water for Delhi till the onset of monsoon.”
