Wanted criminal killed in Ghaziabad encounter

The Ghaziabad police gunned down an accused wanted in several cases on Wednesday night. Vatan Singh was heading towards Dhaulana after robbing a scrap dealer of Rs 2.5 lakh when the police trailed him and shot him dead.

The victim,Dinesh Tyagi,told the police that he was robbed at gunpoint in the Sihani Gate area. Based on Tyagi’s account,the police followed the accused,who was on a motorcycle with two accomplices,the police said.

Around midnight,the police confronted them and asked them to surrender but they started firing. In the ensuing crossfire,Singh was shot but the other two managed to escape. “We have recovered a 9mm pistol and bullets,” Brij Raj Meena,Senior Superintendent of Police,Ghaziabad,said. “Dhaulana SHO Jitendra Singh will be promoted out of turn for killing a wanted criminal,” he said.

Singh was wanted in a dozen cases of loot and murder. A resident of Meerut,he had killed around five persons in 2007.

“He murdered deputy jailor Narendra Dwivedi,an advocate and three brothers in Dhuarala in 2007,and had a reward of Rs 20,000 on his head. The Uttar Pradesh police was looking for him for quite some time,” Vijay Bhushan,SP (city),Ghaziabad,said.
