A sub-inspector with the Ghaziabad Police has been suspended after a video, allegedly showing him and a woman home guard beating up a suspected chain snatcher at a police station, surfaced on Tuesday.
The video shows the woman crying for help and finally collapsing on the floor, as the home guard and the police inspector allegedly take turns to hit her with a wooden plank and a belt.
After the video surfaced online, Ghaziabad Police suspended sub-inspector Brahmo Pal Singh and demanded action against the home guard, Suman.
“The sub-inspector has been suspended. However, we cannot suspend the woman home guard so we have written to the superintendent of police, Home Guards, demanding action against her,” said Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dharminder Singh.
According to police officials, the woman had been picked up from Loni area on Monday, after two incidents of chain-snatching were reported from a flea market there.
“Some gangs of women chain snatchers operate in Ghaziabad. After two such cases were reported from Loni area on Monday, police reached the spot and brought her to the police station for questioning. She had faced charges of chain snatching in an earlier case also,” said SSP Singh.
“There is nothing wrong in bringing people to the police station for questioning. But their actions were completely in contravention of human rights. A sub-inspector has been suspended and a case has been registered. While questioning her, the police beat her up …that is totally wrong. If she was guilty and they could not get a confession out of her, they could have called her in for questioning again,” said Singh.
A case against the two officials has been registered under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code, added police officials.
