The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) said Monday it is conducting a survey of monuments in Delhi to ascertain how many of them commemorate Hindu and Mughal “invaders” who were once at the helm of the city’s administration.
A VHP delegation visited Humayun’s Tomb Sunday, following which the outfit’s national spokesperson Vinod Bansal said the survey would continue over the coming days. “The people of Delhi want to know the current status of Mughal memorials and whether those in the name of the remaining (Hindu) samrats (kings) who ruled Delhi for thousands of years exist or not,” Bansal said.
Memorials of Mughal rulers such as Akbar and those from the Tughlaq era can be found in Delhi but not of Hindu rulers, Bansal said.
“We recall that Prithviraj Chauhan ruled for several years but no symbol of this can be found. There were Rajas Nandpal ji, Hemchand Vikramaditya ji… Dozens of significant rulers transformed Delhi but the only memorials found in the city are of Mughal invaders,” he added.
The VHP leader said this was why a dedicated archaeological team of the organisation is identifying whether symbols of the reign of Mughal or Muslim rulers can also be found in Delhi. “The team is seeking to identify whether symbols of those who defeated such (Mughal) rulers and their mentality too exist. A general survey regarding this is underway. We will choose our further course of action regarding this after the survey concludes,” he added.
The VHP delegation’s visit to the tomb of second Mughal ruler Humayun came days after violence erupted in Nagpur over rumours that a holy book had been desecrated during a demonstration in the city by the VHP and Bajrang Dal, seeking the removal of the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Khuldabad.
