Monks in coloured robes with lotus flowers and auspicious banana trees depict hope — Niren Sen Gupta’s oeuvre gives prominence to symbolism. The former principal of Delhi College of Art is celebrating 40 years of his artistic career with a solo at Art Bull.
“My works have been influenced by places, people, circumstances and my spiritual self and the exploration continues,” says the 74-year-old.
Comprising 40 works, the exhibition traces his journey from his initial years, when he invoked motifs from the animal world, to canvases inspired by shringar and the Princess series that celebrated bright hues.
In a series that borrows from the Ramakrishna Mission, Sengupta imbibes elements of spirituality. “It is a continuation of my basic value of spirituality of human relationships in their different avatars and vantage points,” says Sengupta.
The exhibition is on at Art Bull Gallery, Lado Sarai, till October 10.
