In an attempt to make women councillors more independent while taking decisions for the welfare of people who have elected them, the Delhi BJP will soon dispatch directions to its councillors soon.
Speaking to Newsline, Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay confirmed that letters would be dispatched to women councillors, wherein they would be asked to start using their discretion while working.
The party said this was being done to groom women councillors to become leaders. There are approximately 50 women councillors in all three municipal corporations.
“Even two years after being elected, many councillors have been found to be working as proxies. We have told them to use what they learnt during the orientation session. It is high time they understand that each of them has a larger role to play and it is they who have been elected and not their husbands. Husbands can guide them or help them, but it is they who have to take the lead,” Upadhyay said.
The party said that since most of the women councillors had been elected to the post for the first time, they were yet to learn how corporation works and how to get their work approved. According to the party, the councillors also had to learn how to deal with officials.
“Many of them (councillors) were housewives, and as a result, have remained in background while their husbands made mark for themselves. But this is a golden opportunity for them to prove that they are no less than the men,” a senior BJP leader said.
“This is a great opportunity for women councillors to prove themselves as leaders and we hope we will emerge as better leaders than most of the men in the unit,” another senior leader said.
