Amit Jani, chief of Uttar Pradesh Navnirman Sena, has been arrested for allegedly threatening JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid. Jani is suspected of planting a loaded gun and a letter threatening to behead the two JNU students in a bus last month, said police.
Special Commissioner of Police, Special cell, Arvind Deep said, “Jani was arrested by a team of the Special Cell under Section 41(1) of CrPC. We will hand him over to New Delhi district police.”
The gun and the letter were found on a bus, which was headed towards JNU, on April 15. The driver of the bus had informed police and a case had been registered at Tilak Marg police station. Jani’s brother Saurabh and his friend Sulabh had been arrested from Delhi in connection with the incident.
Police had earlier raided Jani’s office in Lajpat Nagar and other spots in the NCR, but could not find him, said sources. “Jani had claimed in social media posts that he would surrender… he kept changing his mind,” said the officer. Jani had also threatened Kumar on Facebook earlier by claiming he had armed men inside JNU campus, said sources.
