Calling his case as “rarest of rare”,Delhi University (DU) on Friday allowed India Under-19 cricket captain Unmukt Chand to move to the second year and complete his first-year exams in the forthcoming semesters. He will also be allowed to clear the backlog papers from the first two semesters.
The university’s decision came following a chorus of support for Unmukt,a BA first year student of St Stephen’s College,who scored 111 not out in the Under-19 World Cup final against Australia last Sunday to lead the team to victory.
He was barred from sitting for the second semester exams because of poor attendance. DU rules mandate a student to have at least 33.3 per cent attendance in an academic session after all exemptions.
“Thank you St Stephens. Love my college. Thank you everyone for the support. Pappu pass ho gaya:),” he tweeted around 8 pm.
Union ministers Kapil Sibal and Ajay Maken had asked DU Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh and St Stephen’s principal Valson Thampu to look into the matter.
Singh on Friday said: “The university has a very liberal attitude towards sportspersons,especially in the case of Unmukt Chand.”
The university recognised his outstanding achievement in a field of sport and comes under the category of “rarest of rare” cases under its regulations.
