A fifty-five-year-old Unani practitioner was shot dead by three minors in October last year following an alleged dispute over payment of fees for medical treatment, a Police Inquiry Report (PIR) highlighted.

The three felt “humiliated” during the argument with the deceased, Dr Javed Akhtar, in Kalindi Kunj, it added.

The Delhi Police filed a 300-page report on January 31 in connection with the case and they are planning to file a supplementary report as the investigation proceeds, said sources.

Akhtar was shot in the left side of his head while sitting on a chair at Nima Hospital, a small nursing home located in Southeast Delhi, on the intervening night of October 2 and October 3.

He is survived by his wife, who is also a Unani practitioner, and two children who live in Shaheen Bagh.

In its report, police have named around 35 witnesses in the case.

“A few days ago (before the killing), the three minors were treated by Akhtar in the nursing home after they met with an accident. Two of them had bruises and one had a minor fracture in his leg,” a police officer said, citing the inquiry report.

“The treatment bill was Rs 1,400, which was charged after adding the night charge but the three boys paid just Rs 400. This led to a verbal spat,” the officer added. The boys told the police that they felt humiliated during the argument with the doctor and his staff, the officer said.

The accused then allegedly hatched a conspiracy. One of them procured a country-made pistol and two others decided to visit the nursing home to execute the crime, the report said.

“The next day, both the juveniles visited the nursing home at 11 pm to see if Akhtar had come. They executed the crime past midnight,” the source added, citing the report.

Both the accused fled the spot but were later caught by the police. Police also apprehended the third juvenile, who allegedly procured the country-made pistol from western Uttar Pradesh.
