Two workers died and three were injured when a construction site inside AIIMS caved in Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, the deceased were identified as Vinod (35) and Islam (30). Both worked as labourers at the construction site of the institute’s new mother-cum-child OPD block.
“The incident took place around 12.15 pm when the labourers were at the basement of the construction site. Eyewitnesses and the contractor told the police one of the workers left for a break, but the others — Vinod, Islam, Naseeb, Ranjit and Vinay — decided to rest at the site. Suddenly, a huge mound of earth and construction material caved in, trapping all five around 14.5 metres underground,” said a police officer.
Islam’s friend, Remtu Seth said they could do little to help him. “As we were taking out Ranjit (one of the survivors), we could hear Islam’s plea to save him, but we lost him.”
A rescue operation was mounted shortly after the cave-in. “One person was already dead by the time he could be pulled out, the other died in hospital. The injured were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital, and later shifted to JPN Trauma Centre.”
An AIIMS official said, “The condition of the injured workers is stable. The contractual firm, M/s Ahluwalia Construction Company, has indicated that all workers are insured and claims would be settled expeditiously.” The institute has formed a committee to conduct an internal inquiry into the incident, added the official.
The police have registered a case in the matter.
