Two Delhi Police constables and three others have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on charges of running an extortion racket and facilitating a prostitution racket.

The gang, according to police, ran a prostitution racket. When customers arrived at the brothel, the gang would stage police raids to extort the victims. The mastermind of the racket has been identified as Constable Manoj, posted with the Mangolpuri police station. Constable Pawan, posted in the Crime Branch, helped Manoj run the racket. They would, according to police, tell the customers that they would be implicated in false rape cases if they didn’t pay up.

Police said if any complainant approached the Crime Branch to inform them about the racket,Constable Pawan would destroy the evidence and threaten the victims. Police said the gang managed to extort money from several persons in Delhi.

Investigations into the racket began after the Crime Branch received a complaint in which the victim claimed that police officers were demanding Rs 3 lakh from him. He claimed that he was lured by a woman and her associates in Rani Bagh.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav said: “The complainant had been detained for about three hours and thrashed. The accused posed as Crime Branch officials. They had demanded Rs 6 lakh from the complainant and after negotiations brought it down to Rs 3 lakh.”
