Two Class XII students of a government school in west Delhi’s Nangloi area allegedly stabbed their teacher in front of their classmates Monday, apparently after one of them was rusticated for low attendance, said police.
The teacher, Mukesh Kumar (50), received stab wounds in his abdomen, thigh and waist, said police. Kumar, who is a PGT teacher and teaches Hindi, is being treated at Balaji Action Hospital. His condition is stated to be critical, police added. The teacher was stabbed at about 4.30 pm when he came out of a classroom after conducting a half-yearly examination, said police. The two students stopped him and they had an argument during which one of them whipped out a knife and stabbed him several times, police added.
Sources said one of the two students was rusticated from the school on September 12 as he had remained absent for several days. The school had issued a notice to his parents about the rustication. “It seems the students were outraged by the rustication. The reason will be clear once they are apprehended,” said a police officer.
After stabbing the teacher, the duo ran away. Other students informed school authorities, following which police was called. Prem Prakash, a teacher from the school, told The Indian Express Kumar was lying in a pool of blood. “We immediately rushed him to the hospital. He never thought of such thing would happen to him.” Kumar lives in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, with his wife and three children. He commutes by bus to school.
CP Singh, president of Government School Teachers’ Association, said, “This is a shocking incident that raises concerns on the safety of teachers inside the school. The students were carrying arms and they entered inside easily.” He said the association will protest if the accused were not apprehended soon.
Education director Saumya Gupta said, “This was a group of unruly boys in school. Teachers had earlier gone to their homes to speak to their parents about the indiscipline as well. They could have been nursing a grudge against teachers because of this. The boys did not have an exam today but came to school where they spoke to the vice-principal about leaving the school. They then went on to stab the teacher. The incident had nothing to do with the exams.” The department is monitoring the teacher’s condition and is in touch with the doctors.
