Troubled by finances,woman jumps to death from Pragati Maidan station

A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the Pragati Maidan Metro station on Wednesday evening.

A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the Pragati Maidan Metro station on Wednesday evening.

Police said Astha was seen talking on her mobile phone on the elevated platform of the Metro station,after which she threw her bag on the road below and jumped off.

An autorichshaw driver,who was waiting for passengers near the station,and a security guard with a bank rushed to her aid and later informed police.

Astha was taken to Ram Mahohar Lohia Hospital,where she succumbed to injuries.

Karanbeer,a guard at a nearby ATM,said: “I witnessed the whole incident. The girl appeared to be be in her teens. She was on the phone and also missed the train,which was going towards Connaught Place. All of a sudden she threw her handbag on the road,put her mobile phone in her pocket and jumped off. All this happened within seconds. She was lying in a pool of blood and was severely injured on the left side of her head.”

Sanjay Bhatia,Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Railways),said: “It appears she was going through financial problems,and had been looking for a job. These could be the reasons that led her to ending her life. We will be analysing the CCTV footage at the Metro station.”

Astha’s mother had passed away 15 days ago. She was a resident of Madangir,JJ Colony.

Police plan to check Astha’s call records to find out who she was talking to before the incident.
