Three days after tremors, mock earthquake drill in Delhi

(Source: Delhi govt) A multi-state mock exercise to assess the preparedness of emergency services in the capital was conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Friday.
Conducted in the wake of strong tremors jolting parts of North India three days ago, the exercise involved Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, with all 11 districts of the city participating in it to test and improve preparedness of response mechanisms, communication systems, and coordination between various local authorities and emergency services in the event of an earthquake.

The entire National Capital Region falls in seismic Zone IV and is, therefore, vulnerable to earthquakes. On Tuesday evening, tremors were felt across the NCR for several seconds with people sharing videos on social media of fans swaying and furniture in homes rattling.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the epicentre of the earthquake, which was of a magnitude of 6.6, was 133 km from Fayzabad in Afghanistan at a depth of 156 km.
On Friday, according to the DDMA, staging areas were operationalised to receive the responders and form a task force to combat the earthquake disaster. In addition, Relief Camps were also activated to cater for the displaced persons in the event of an earthquake.

Brig. B.S. Thakar, Nodal Officer from the NDMA for the mock exercise emphasised the importance of such exercises in preparing for potential disasters and stated that NDMA will continue to work towards improving the preparedness and response mechanisms of the State and Districts authorities.
