A 29-year-old man smothered his wife to death after she refused to give him Rs 1,500 she had received from her brother as a rakhi present. The incident was reported from East Delhi’s Geeta Colony area in the wee hours of Monday.
The man, Paramjeet Singh, is a travel agent who had reportedly suffered huge losses in his business and had to shut down his agency. Police said the stress of financial problems often led him to quarrel with his wife, Ravneet Kaur.
Kaur had reportedly gone to her parents house in Rajouri Garden on Sunday to celebrate rakhi. Her brother had given her Rs 1,500 as a rakhi present. When she returned home on Monday, she informed her husband about the money, police said.
“Singh told his wife to give him the cash but she refused to do so, saying it was a rakhi present from her brother. The couple had an argument over it, after which Ravneet retired to her bedroom and slept off. Around 2 am, Singh went to the bedroom and smothered her to death, while their two-month-old daughter slept beside her,” a senior police officer said.
Police said after killing his wife, Singh took the child to his parents house, also in Geeta Colony. He left the child there and returned home.
“Singh’s parents live in another block in the same area. He dropped his daughter to their house and returned to his rented flat. By the time he returned, one of the neighbours who had heard the couple’s argument, had informed police. A team of police personnel reached the flat and arrested Singh from the house,” an officer said.
The neighbour had directly called the SHO of Geeta Colony informing him about the couple’s argument. The neighbour had also informed police that he heard the woman in the house shouting and that the police should go and check if everything was fine, police said.
A case of murder has been registered and Singh was arrested. Police have sent Ravneet’s body for a post-mortem examination and have also informed her family members. The investigation in the matter is on, police said.
