In an election which saw a record high turnout,Union Secretary for Transport and Highways Vijay Chhibber was elected president in the Delhi Gymkhana Club elections on Sunday morning. Club officials said while voting normally hovers around the 1,200 mark, this year the turnout was above 2,300 of 5,600 eligible voters.
Chhibber beat his nearest competitor, former RAW chief A S Dulat,by 308 votes. The other contenders in the four-pronged race were Urmila Gupta,a retired Indian Information Services officer, and B L Vohra, former Director General of Police. Gupta and Vohra finished third and fourth respectively. This years gymkhana election was amongst the most keenly contested elections, with a cloud of allegations, including throwing lavish cocktail parties and gender bias doing the rounds.
Chhibber said,This is for my mother, who passed away last year. There are several issues to resolve. We also have to make sure that financial dealings are audited.
