Toddler killed, sister injured as fire breaks out at house in East Delhi

Short circuit led to the fire, no foul play suspected: Police

Toddler killed, sister injured as fire breaks out at house in East Delhi Police said no foul play has been suspected and that further investigation into the matter is underway.

A one-year-old toddler was killed, while his four-year-old sister sustained injuries after a fire broke out inside their house in East Delhi’s Rajeev Camp in Jhilmil Colony on Saturday, police said. The fire was allegedly caused by a short circuit.

The police received a call from Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital Saturday and were informed that two children were brought to the hospital with burn injuries. Teams were dispatched to the location.

“The children were identified as Pari and Ansh. According to the medical reports, both had sustained burn injuries,” a senior officer said.

The police were later informed by the hospital that Ansh had succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Their mother, Nisha, told the police that she was cooking inside the room and had stepped out to go to the bathroom when the incident happened. She left her children on the bed — around 1.5 feet away from the gas stove.

On returning after about 15 minutes, she found the bed had caught fire and the children had sustained burn injuries.

The girl is currently undergoing treatment, while the boy’s body has been preserved for a post-mortem examination. Police said no foul play has been suspected and that further investigation into the matter is underway.
