Three students of Gautam Buddha University (GBU) were killed after their speeding bike rammed into a water tanker near Chuharpur underpass in Beta-2 police station area, police said on Sunday.
According to police, the deceased were identified as Swayam Sagar (19), a resident of Panchvati Colony in Ghaziabad, Kush Upadhyay (21), a resident of Ghazipur’s Dhammaur, and Samarth Pundir (18) a resident of Satellite Colony of Bareilly district.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Of Police, Sudheer Kumar said that on Sunday the three students had left for lunch on their motorcycle when they hit a water tanker which was moving ahead of them.
ADCP Kumar said, “ Two students were critically injured and were admitted to the hospital where they were declared dead. The third student was referred to a private hospital and succumbed to injuries there.”
Station House Officer, Greater Noida’s Beta-2 area, Vinod Kumar told The Indian Express that all the three students were friends and were pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science from the university. “Since it was Sunday and the college was closed they decided to head for lunch together. None of them wore helmets,” he said.
The SHO said that prima facie it looks that the bike got disbalanced and they hit the tanker which was attached to a truck. “We got a call at around 2:30pm. By the time we reached, someone had called an ambulance and admitted them to GIMS. One died 200 metres before reaching the hospital and the other a few minutes later,” SHO Kumar.
Police said that Samarth was admitted to Fortis by his family after his aunt and grandmother who had been staying in Noida were informed of the accident.
The Gautam Buddha University issued a statement expressing condolence on Monday. “The University is deeply saddened by the untimely demise of three of our students in a tragic road accident. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones, and stand in solidarity with them in this hour of irreparable loss,” the university said.
“As a mark of respect, the tablet distribution program scheduled for Monday has been postponed. A condolence meeting will also be held on campus to honor the departed souls. The University prays for peace to the departed and strength to the bereaved families to bear this tragedy,” said a spokesperson of Gautam Buddha University.
