The Noida police on Thursday arrested three persons for the alleged abduction and murder of a 20-year-old student of Amity University who had gone missing on March 20.
The trio Vivek Patel,Saurav Punjabi and Vishal Sachdev were friends of the victim,Rohit Singh, and had abducted him for ransom,a police officer said.
A resident of Aligarh,Rohit was a second-year BTech student and was staying as a paying guest near the university. He knew Vivek and Saurav as they were his friends from Aligarh. Vishal,a resident of Panipat, was a cousin of Saurav. Vivek is the grandson of former UP legislator Indrapal Singh. On March 20,the trio came to meet Rohit and asked him to accompany them. They took Rohit in a red Maruti Ritz owned by Vivek to Panipat, said Ashok K Singh,Senior Superintendent of Police,Gautam Budh Nagar.
Vivek runs a dog breeding business in Panipat and was not doing well. Saurav was assisting him in the business. Vishal was jobless for four months. They all needed money and therefore hatched a plan to abduct Rohit and demand ransom, added the SSP.
Rohits father Mukesh Singh is a government contractor in Aligarh. The family said Vivek often visited Rohit at his Aligarh home. On March 20,when Rohits mobile went unreachable, the family called up at his Noida home. The next day,his father and brother Anurag came to Noida. We registered a complaint that our son had gone missing at the Sector 39 police station on March 21, said Mukesh.
The same evening, the family received a call from a PCO in Gurgaon demanding a ransom of Rs 1 crore. They immediately informed the police about the ransom call. The family, however, alleged that the police did not take any action and had the police taken the case seriously,Rohit could have been saved.
We told the police about the ransom call immediately but the complaint of abduction was registered on March 23, added the father.
According to the police, after Anurag said he suspected Vivek to be an accused, teams were formed to trace Rohit and his mobile was kept on surveillance. The trio had taken Rohit to Panipat and kept him confined at Viveks office till March 22,said the SSP.
Vivek had accompanied the deceaseds family when they had gone to the police station to file the report. The accused accompanied the family so that he could know our moves, the SSP added.
After realising that the family would not pay the ransom, the accused strangulated Rohit and dumped his body in a canal in Aligarh on March 23. Rohits hands and legs were tied. After recovering the body, the Aligarh police called his parents to identify him, said Singh.
Subsequently, the Noida police arrested the trio and recovered a countrymade pistol from Viveks car. A few other persons are also involved in the crime. We are yet to find evidence against them, the SSP added.
