Three persons have been arrested in connection with a burglary at a senior citizen’s house in South Delhi’s Saket, with gold and diamond jewellery worth around Rs 21 lakh being recovered, police said on Thursday.
DCP Ankit Chauhan identified the accused as Shivam Sonkar alias Sibu (25) and Akash Sharma (32), both residents of Jahangirpuri, as well as a 28-year-old woman from Amritsar.
Police said the burglary took place on October 31 when the senior citizen was away from his flat. Unknown persons allegedly broke into the house by breaking a window and decamped with gold and diamond jewellery, wristwatches, perfume, and other valuables. Following this, a case was registered at Saket police station.
“Considering the gravity of the offence, a joint team of AATS (Anti-Auto Theft Squad) South District and Saket police station was constituted under the supervision of ACP Arvind Kumar,” an officer said.
Police analysed CCTV camera footage from the area, examined technical data and developed local intelligence. “One suspect was noticed near the complainant’s house in CCTV footage and was identified as Shivam Sonkar alias Sibu,” the officer said.
Shivam was arrested on December 16. During questioning, he allegedly disclosed the name of his accomplice, Akash, who was subsequently arrested.
“During questioning, both the accused said that the stolen jewellery had been concealed at a rented premises in Amritsar,” Chauhan said.
Following this, raids were conducted at Mohini Park in Amritsar, recovering stolen gold jewellery, wristwatch, and perfume.
A woman, suspected to be the receiver of the stolen property and a relative of the accused, was also arrested.
Police said the total recovered gold jewellery weighs about 131.41 grams and includes bangles, chains, a mangalsutra, a pendant and a pair of diamond-studded earrings.
