Three children, all under the age of 10,were killed after they were hit by Faizabad Express in the Masuri area of Ghaziabad on Monday morning.
The three have been identified as Azad (8),Dilshad (6) and Fardeen (6). While brothers Azad and Dilshad were declared dead on arrival at a hospital,Fardeen succumbed to injuries a few hours later.
A senior police officer said the incident took place at 9.30 am,behind the Masuri Kasba, where Azad and Dilshad lived.
Fardeen, who was their cousin, had arrived from Meerut to attend a wedding. The three were playing near the tracks. Two trains were moving on the tracks behind their homes. The three children began waving at passengers on one of the trains. Because of the noise of the passing train, they didnt notice the approaching Faizabad Express. All three were hit by the train, despite passengers screaming at them, asking them to move, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rannvijay Singh said.
Senior police officers admitted that such accidents are common in the area, and steps were being taken to educate the local populace to not allow their children near tracks.
If a vehicle goes past a barricade and an accident occurs,we can be held accountable for it. To prevent incidents of people being run over by trains,we have been sending personnel to warn residents against allowing children to play near tracks. We will undertake these awareness programmes afresh in the next few weeks, a senior officer said.
