Tempo hits couple’s car,woman killed

A woman was killed and her husband seriously injured after the car they were travelling in was hit by a speeding tempo near Qutab Hotel in South Delhi late on Monday evening.

A woman was killed and her husband seriously injured after the car they were travelling in was hit by a speeding tempo near Qutab Hotel in South Delhi late on Monday evening.

Police officials said Punjabi Bagh-based businessman Sanjay Jain (37) and his wife Meenu were returning home around 11.30 pm after offering prayers at the Jain temple in Mehrauli when the accident occurred.

Eyewitnesses told the police the tempo hit the car head on — the impact was so severe that the tempo carried the car for a few metres before coming to a halt.

The police said the tempo driver was trying to overtake another vehicle but lost control as he was speeding.

Eyewitnesses called the police,who rushed the couple to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where Meenu was declared dead on arrival. Doctors said Sanjay suffered multiple fractures and had to be operated on.

While the tempo driver fled the spot,an eyewitness noted down the tempo’s registration number and gave it to the police.

Police said Sanjay runs a hair dye manufacturing business in West Delhi while Meenu was a housewife. The couple has two children.

The police have registered a case under Section 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) at the Vasant Vihar police station and have sent a notice to the tempo’s owner who is reportedly based in Mehrauli.
