A 19-year-old man was arrested on the charge of murdering a 7-year-old boy and stuffing the body in a desert cooler installed in a temple in Northeast Delhi’s Gokulpuri area.

Police said the accused, identified as Sachin, was reportedly in love with the mother of the boy and he wanted to get rid the child so that he could marry her.

According to police,Sachin planned the murder in advance. On August 30,a night before abducting the child,he went to the temple’s priest and asked him for the key to the temple. He told the priest that he was mentally disturbed and wished to meditate in the temple for which he needed the keys.

On August 31,Sachin abducted the child when he was playing outside the house and took him to the temple. “Sachin smashed the child’s head against the wall and the boy fell unconscious. He then strangled him. To make sure the child was dead,he pulled out a rope and strangled him again,” a police officer said.

Police said Sachin then stuffed the body in a desert cooler installed in the temple. While on his way back home,Sachin heard a slight movement inside the cooler. Thinking that the child must be alive he went back and opened the cooler. “To make sure that the child is dead,he took out a blade from his pocket and slashed his neck. He also inflicted injuries on his face,” the officer said.

Sachin then left the body in the cooler and fled, thinking he would dispose of the body the next day. However, the mother of the child filed a missing complaint on the same night, which scared the accused. “The next morning police began making inquiries about the child and this scared Sachin even more,” the officer said.

Police said in a bid to save himself,he tried forcing his 14-year-old brother to own up to the murder. He allegedly told his brother that since he was a juvenile,he would get away with a minimal sentence. “When questioned, the younger brother of the accused narrated the entire series of events. We are verifying the facts and investigation is on,” the officer said.
