Tax dues: North body notice to Asaram’s ashram in Karol Bagh

The North corporation has slapped a notice on self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s ashram in Karol Bagh over discrepancies in property tax assessment.

The North corporation has slapped a notice on self-styled godman Asaram Bapu’s ashram in Karol Bagh over discrepancies in property tax assessment. According to corporation officials,the notice has been served after the ashram was found undertaking commercial activities which is not allowed in such institutions.

M S A Khan,assessor and collector,North corporation,said the three-acre ashram on Upper Ridge Road in Karol Bagh has not been filing property tax returns and that dues were pending since 2004. “We are treating it as a commercial unit as they were buying and selling products in the ashram. We have given them time till June 30 to reply to the notice. If found guilty,the corporation can attach the property and,if needed,bank accounts,” Khan said.

Under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act,religious places are exempted from paying property tax and no commercial activities can be carried out on such land.

Director (Press Information),North corporation,Yogendra Mann said the total dues were yet to be calculated. “We have given the ashram a chance to self-assess their tax and then officials will cross-check the amount,” he said.

“Asaram has three properties in Delhi — a 15-20 acre ashram in Rajokri,another near Rajouri Garden and a third one in Dwarka Sector 22. South corporation is yet to decide on whether to inspect these ashrams,” Mukesh Yadav,Director (Press and Information),South corporation,said.
