A 45-year-old daily-wage worker was mowed down by a speeding Range Rover in Northwest Delhi’s Keshavpuram area late Saturday night.
Jokhu Prasad was reportedly crossing the road with his family when the speeding SUV, coming from Inderlok and going towards Prem Nath Chowk, ran over him. While his family members had a narrow escape, Prasad was crushed under its wheels. The driver, identified as Sukrit Pal Singh (22), a resident of Model Town and son of a businessman, did not flee the spot and stopped the car, police said.
Singh has been arrested.
“Prasad, who worked as a labourer in Wazirpur, was returning home with his family after watching Ramlila when the incident happened. Singh was arrested from the spot. He was not driving under the influence of alcohol, a police officer said.
The accused told police he lost control of the vehicle. “The accused’s brother and sister were also inside the car. They helped rush the victim to hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival. Doctors said he died of excessive bleeding. We sent his body for a postmortem examination,” the officer said.
Police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving causing death against the driver. The Range Rover was seized. “We have recorded statements of eyewitnesses that includes the family members of the deceased. We have also recorded the statement of the accused, who said he lost control of the SUV,” the officer said.
