Supply up,onion price will fall: CM

Dikshit said supply of onions from other states was on the rise, and the price would fall.

Spelling relief to the residents of Delhi,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday said the Election Commission has agreed to allow the government sell onions at reasonable rates through traders and agriculture marketing committees.

Dikshit said supply of onions from other states was on the rise, and the price would fall.

Dikshit told reporters that the sale of onions at reasonable rates will be conducted “on the lines of the earlier market intervention by the government during skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, including onions”.

Dikshit said the supply of onions to the city from other states was increasing, with 1,600 tonnes being brought in on Saturday,as opposed to 1,400 tonnes on Friday.

“The arrival from Rajasthan is picking up and prices will stabilise soon. The supply from Karnataka and other states has also started. A team of officials has been sent to Alwar to purchase onions in bulk,” she said.

Dikshit said by Monday about 125 mobile vans will sell onions. “Each van will cover four localities in a day. There is no restriction on quantity of sale from the vans. The enforcement wing has been put on alert to stop hoarding. No incident of hoarding has come to the fore in Delhi, though the practice in other states is affecting prices in Delhi,” she said.
