Last year,he debuted at Cannes Film Festival as a guest — to promote his Punjabi film,Khushiyaan. This year, singer Jasbir Jassi has been chosen by the National Film Development Corporation to perform at the Incredible India-themed party to be held on May 21 during the Cannes film festival.

“I have always wanted to make my presence felt in the global music arena, and this is a turning point,” says Jassi, who is the first Punjabi singer to sing at Cannes. He sees the event as a platform to educate the global audience on “real Indian music”,which is full of soul-stirring poetry and melody. “I want to tell people that our music is unmatched and we can touch many hearts with our songs that have just a harmonium as an accompaniment,” says Jassi.

To make the show a memorable one,Jassi has given his performance a Sufi flavour, and has been rehearsing for this for a couple of months now. He will be accompanied by six musicians and all of them will be dressed in traditional Punjabi phulkari outfits designed by Harinder Singh

of the 1469 clothing brand. “I will also be singing excerpts from Gurbani,” he adds.

A live performance can be excruciating and it was music singer-composer Sukhwinder Singh who suggested Jassi to practise under the shower for it. “It sounds crazy, but I followed. The logic is that under a shower, you only exhale, and that is the exercise,”

says Jassi.

Lately,Jassi’s works have included a lot of Sufi poetry and music. He admits that he’s immersed into the works of Sufi poets such as Baba Bulleh Shah,Sultan Bahoo,Amir Khusrau and Farid.

More recently,he has sung Amrita Pritam’s verses for filmmaker Harjeet Singh’s film based on the life of poet-painter Imroz. Besides,he is also working on a track with music directors Ehsaan and Loy for MTV Coke Studio. But for now,it’s over

to Cannes.
