The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has started an online petition against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding that the police personnel responsible for Students’ Federation of India (SFI) activist Sudipta Gupta’s death “be identified through an independent inquiry and strict penal action initiated against them”. The petition, started on ipetitions.com,says,“We are shocked and outraged by your statement made on April 4,2013,terming the death of student activist Sudipta Gupta in the custody of Kolkata Police as a petty matter. Even before an inquiry into the death was concluded, you characterised it as an accident, thus prejudicing inquiry…” JNUSU president V Lenin, who started the petition, said: “We are mobilising support for our petition both within and outside the JNU campus. Many JNU professors have signed this petition.”
