To guide students planning to study Punjabi and Urdu languages,Delhi Minorities Commission,in association with Punjabi Helpline,an NGO,and the Urdu and Punjabi departments of the Delhi University organised a counselling session-cum-workshop at the conference centre in North Campus.
A platform for interaction between students and members of the Commission, heads of concerned departments and principals of various colleges, the session was attended by more than 200 aspirants and parents.
Talking about the origin of the idea,Pushpinder Singh, member of Delhi Minorities Commission, said: The issue was raised in the Sikh advisory committee meeting of the Minorities Commission on the grounds that languages are not being promoted and encouraged.
Later,a network of students pursuing Punjabi and Urdu languages at the Class XII level was prepared, and they were told about the session,he added.

We have seen that for other courses there is counselling available, but for these languages, students dont know how to go ahead and what their options are, Singh said.
Most questions at the event focussed on the eligibility criteria and future prospects. However, there were also complaints about lack of teachers and inadequate books and study material in libraries.
It was a really nice session. I got the opportunity to interact with senior professors and principals of DU. The session has gone a long way in clearing my doubts, said Gurpreet Kaur,an aspirant.
Deputy Dean Students Welfare,G S Tuteja, believes that it is a good beginning and should be encouraged. It is really good to see these efforts bearing fruit. But I believe that in the future instead of just having languages,it should be made broader and include minorities as a whole, said Tuteja, who was also present at the session.
The session will also be held tomorrow from 10 am to 12.30 pm at the same venue.
