Saluting the spirit of the national capital, the city government on Thursday unveiled its official tagline — Dildaar Dilli. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the catchy phrase will become the identity of Delhi in the coming days.

Coined by Rohini-based resident,Amit Anand, the tagline was selected after a committee went through over 12,000 entries in a competition organised by Delhi government and Delhi Tourism.

Dikshit said the city of Delhi, loved by many since ages, has always accepted by everyone as their own and that is its biggest identity.

“Yeh sabko apna leti hai. Yeh Dilli ki badappan bhi hai aur sabse badi pehchan bhi hai (It accepts everyone. This is its greatness and also its biggest identity),” she said.

Dikshit said the committee took months to select the winner from ‘Dilkash’,‘Dilwaali’,Damdaar’ and ‘Shandaar’ Dilli, among others. “I think this competition itself has shown the love people have for the city of Delhi, and that itself makes it historic. The taglines show what comes to people’s mind when they think of Delhi, and this comes from the heart,” she said.

Taking cue from states that already have a tagline, such as Kerala (God’s own country),Delhi’s phrase is expected to promote the city as a tourism-friendly destination.

“The tagline sums up the essence of Delhi, its history, culture, modernity and diversity. Delhi is the gateway to India and it receives record number of tourists every year. The new identity will surely attract one and all and promote Delhi in the global map,” a government official said.

The winner of the competition, which invited entries from across the country, walked away with Rs 50,000. Consolation prizes were also handed to other selected candidates.

“I read about this competition in the newspapers a year ago. My tagline ‘Dildaar Dilli’ is my perception of Delhi. I was informed that my tagline had been shortlisted a few months ago,’’ Anand said. He was accompanied by his mother,Santosh,at the ceremony.

Ten-year-old Charvi Dikshit received a consolation prize for her tagline ‘Dildaar,Shandaar,Jaandaar Dilli’. Her father said: “We all entered the competition together. Our daughter came up with the tagline on her own.’’

Charvi said: “I am very happy to have won a prize for my tagline.’’
